It is with great emotions that we said goodbye to our close relatives on Monday evening in Brussels Airport. It is never easy to leave for such a long time, but not being able to have direct contact for several months is always more difficult. However, I always keep in mind that the first scientists and explorer that were leaving for Antarctic expeditions in the past, had no ways to give news or to receive any from their families during many months. Thinking about it helps me to relatvize even though I should say that it was very hard to say goodbye to my dear half. I always feel a bit egoistic to make my loved ones worry and hurt when I leave to live my dreams, but "passion wins" and I feel extremely lucky to have so much support and encouragements from my loved one, our relatives and friends.

You can find some pictures of our departure (Thanks Jérôme for the video in the last post and for the nice photos).
Now it is 5am (on thursday morning) in Christchurch and I woke at the hotel where we arrived yesterday after 33hours of travel. It was a very long trip, but I feel more motivated than ever. We managed to go through the customs with all our luggage, so that was a big relief. During the short, but nice evening of yesterday, we went for dinner with Brett, a colleague from my previous Arctic expedition who comes to help with the installation of the atmospheric lines and who lend us his machine to measure for the cruise. It is always great to meet again with people with who we shared intense moments during past expeditions, but this time Brett will not join the cruise unfortunately.
In a few hours, we will board the Palmer, our ice-breaker and we will have to work hard to install everything before our departure the 10th of April. From now on, I might not have any internet connection anymore, so I will send my posts to my friend Hanneke via the webmail of the ship and she will publish them on the blog. Feel free to write comments here, she will share them with me and I will try to answer via her. Thanks a lot Hanneke ;)
All the best to you all and thank you very much for all your messages, encouragements and for following us !
